Teenagers with ADHD may struggle to keep up with expectations and responsibilities during high school. However, there are ways parents may help their adolescent children with ADHD in managing their friendships and academics.

In general, teens with ADHD show fewer of the hyperactive symptoms we associate with the condition in children. However, once students start high school, there are much higher expectations for them both academically and socially, which can be difficult for teenagers with ADHD.

Concerns and Conditions in Teens with ADHD

If your child has ADHD, it's important to watch out for issues with more than just their academic performance. Additionally, you should be aware of issues with social relationships, emotional stability and risky behaviour. We'll focus on each of these categories separately and how you can help them.

School

Teenagers with ADHD frequently have lower grades and low scores on standardised achievement tests. Even if your teen doesn't have major issues with hyperactivity or impulsivity, signs of inattention and difficulty organising themselves can be very detrimental once academic pressures are raised.

You can help your child to follow a sense of routine. This can be in terms of having an organised and practically laid out a study schedule. It can also help to get someone ( tutor, coach) if your child is having trouble with a particular academic subject or even developing the self-discipline to complete their homework. A sense of structure and discipline can be a great tool for your child.

Emotional Regulation

All children experience an emotional rollercoaster during their teenage years. But, those with ADHD are more likely to have issues with emotion regulation, which could lead to extreme emotions. They may find it particularly challenging to manage their frustration because of their emotional impulsivity. Both they and the people around them may find it difficult.

The most important thing you can do is encourage your adolescent to practise calming techniques and acquire coping mechanisms. You can also advise them on the importance of expressing regret after losing your temper. Cognitive behavioural therapy may be helpful for ADHD children who are experiencing severe issues with impulsivity.

Friendships

According to research, they have fewer friendships that are mutual, and are more likely to be avoided or rejected by their peers. Additionally, they are more likely to experience bullying themselves or may bully others. It might be brought on by poor social and communication abilities.

The most crucial thing you can do is keep track of the people your adolescent is hanging out with. Also, encourage them to talk to you or another trustworthy adult about friendship and relationship issues. Encouragement of extracurricular activities is also crucial because they provide social opportunities in an organised environment. You may want to find a mental health professional who teaches social skills if you notice that they are seriously struggling to make and keep friends.

Risky Behaviour

According to research, teenagers with ADHD typically start using alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs sooner than typical kids. Additionally, they have a tendency to become sexually active earlier. They are more likely to engage in unprotected sex, and have higher chances to contract STDs.

It's crucial for parents to always be aware of where their teen is and who they're hanging out with.  Inform your adolescent of the dangers of substance abuse and sexual activity, and ask them to talk openly with you about these matters. While you want them to be aware of your expectations and rules, you also want your child to feel at ease approaching and talking with you  or giving you a call if they encounter difficulties.

Concluding words

Acknowledge that your child's concerns are due to developmental disorder. Although ADHD may not have visible external symptoms, it is a disability and needs to be handled as such. Keep in mind that your child can't "snap out of it" or "just be relaxed and normal" whenever you start to feel angry or agitated.

It looks easy, but keep things in perspective and take each day as it comes. Recognise that as the parent, you set rules for acceptable behaviour in the house. Be kind and patient at all times, but resist becoming intimidated or bullied by your child's actions when they fail to finish a task.
